Polish

This was the last idea which I had written for the short movies.

A typical middle class Indian family enjoying their early morning coffee reading the morning news paper, the son goes near the kitchen and asks her mom for 100 Rupees, which the father who’s sitting on his easy chair hears and screams at the son, “ Idiot you're 24 now, go get a life, earn your bread”. The son walks out of the house furiously.

He comes out of his house puts his hand to search for some money in his pocket, but finds only a 5 rupee note. As he moves on the road he finds a 100 rupee note lying on the ground. He looks around, and slowly picks it up, and happily moves ahead making his mind to have a sumptuous breakfast.

On his way he sees a small boy of about 10 years polishing shoes of a guy dressed in a suit, when the guy offers money for the polish he keeps in front of him a small piggy bank on which it's written “My school Fees”. He just puts a couple of rupees and goes away.

This guy goes near the kid, takes out that 100 rupee note that he found and puts it into the piggy bank.
He also puts his own 5 rupee into the piggy bank.
The kid asks "sab polish" and looks at his feet.
The guy is just wearing flip flops.
He smiles at the kid, pats his head and moves ahead.

Then the credit rolls out
Where we say
“Good things happen, YOU are just a medium”

1st good thing- The boy getting enough money for his fees
2nd – The guy realizes if a small boy can earn his money by self employment, why can’t he!

Eternal

This is also one of the ideas which I wrote in a light vein.

Scene 1 :

Engineering class room
A guy dressed in funky jeans with pierced ears and a goatee, is sitting in his engineering examination hall.
He slowly opens his shirt's sleeve and picks a chit and copies it into his answer sheet.
Then he takes out a chit from his socks and his collar, he copies that as well to his answer sheet.
He then peeps into other's paper to copy.

After a while the bell rings.

3 Years later

Scene 2:

The same guy is completely changed, he is in formals now, he has removed his ear rings, he’s clean shaven, and he’s carrying a laptop entering into his office.
He enters his cubicle turns his PC on and opens the browser and enters
Google.com
Codeguru.com
Answers.yahoo.com
StackOverflow

Then the credit rolls out where we say

Some things never change!!!

Blind Date

This is a short movie idea which I wrote in a light vein.

In a book store, a guy is reading a magazine, he’s flipping pages and seeing his favorite movie stars.

Right in front of the next rack a beautiful girl is standing. She has a book in her hand but she’s not reading it, but she’s seeing him and smiling.

This guy blushes at first and makes his mind to approach the girl.

He goes near the girl and says, “hey, how about a date” suddenly out of shock she drops the book in her hand.

He gets down to pick the book and he notices that it's actually a Braille book( books read by blinds).

Then he clears his throat, smiles and says, “ how about a blind date??” ;)

Then the credit rolls.

National Flag

This is the third of my short movie ideas.

Characters:
Sooraj: The kid
Sam : The funky young man

Scene:

Sam is driving his car and Eminem’s "Please stand up" is being played in his car with loud volume.
The car stops at a traffic signal.

A boy holding miniature Flag pins comes near the window and knocks it. Sam tells him to go away. The boy repetitively knocks the window. Sam gets annoyed and frustrated but finally he takes a five rupee note out of his wallet lowers the window, offers the money and says, “GET LOST” in a loud and harsh tone.

The boy with a confident look and a hint of smile on his face, hands over the pin to Sam and says

“It’s FREE, INDIA is FREE, and WE ARE CELEBRATING IT, HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY” and goes away.

Dumbstruck by this, he stops the music in his car then the credit rolls.

Yellow & Black

This was second of my short movie ideas.
There’s a fair going on in an Indian village, where a bunch of people painted in Yellow and Black are doing the traditional Tiger dance.A lady has come to this village along with her little boy to show him the place where she grew up in.

Looking at the dancers, the kid asks,

Kid : who are they?
Mom : They are Tiger dancers.

Kid: why are they painted like that?
Mom: because that is the color of Tigers.

Kid: What is a Tiger?
Mom: It's an animal that used to exist.

Kid: Where are they now?
Mom: !!!

It may be too late,  next generation may not get the chance to even see the REAL TIGERS

Pragathi

This was the first short movie idea that I wrote.

Characters:
Husband : Shekar
Wife : Priya
Child : Pragathi (meaning progress)
Cleaner boy : Chotu

Scene 1:
A new small car stops with a tire screeching sound in front of a super market.
A cleaner boy Chotu comes near the driver’s seat and offers to clean the windshield for Rs 5.
Shekar accepts that and orders him to clean the car before he comes back from shopping

Meanwhile Priya and Pragathi get down from the back door
Pragathi pesters her mom to play a board game with her, but Priya says that she has some shopping
to do and orders Pragathi to stay inside the car.

Both the parents enter the super market, while Chotu and Pragathi look at each other.

Scene 2:
Both Shekar and Priya come back with lots of bags in their hands.
Shekar looks at the unclean windshield with the yellow cleaning cloth on the bonnet.
Enraged by this Shekar looks for that cleaner boy and he finds both Chotu and Pragathi playing a board game on the stairs of the super market.

He goes near them to scold them but just as he’s about to scold, he sees the game board which's a ‘Scrabble board' on which these letters are made,

Short Movie Ideas

I have always admired the power of movies in communicating a message across to people. Though the majority of the movies made are for entertainment, there are certain movies which can have a lasting impression on the viewer. A few years back when I was working at Infosys Limited Bangalore, I got the opportunity to work with the movie making club, where I realized the power of short movies in delivering powerful messages to audiences.

I got the opportunity to act, direct and write for some of the most interesting short movies. Over the next few posts, I'll be posting some of the short movie ideas that I came up with. You are welcome to share it after giving due credit to the source.

12 Angry men - Lessons learnt

12 Angry Men is a classic movie, which was released in the year 1957. The entire movie is a discussion between 12 members of the jury who are deciding the fate of a boy in a murder case. Following is my analysis of the movie and the lessons that we can learn from the movie.

Firstly Juror number eight was fully aware of his responsibilities. He knew his decision could change the course of a human life and a person who respects the judiciary system would never make a judgement of this magnitude in haste. Though rest of the jury thought that the case was an open and shut case he thought otherwise.  He made them to think, question the witnesses, the motive of the defense lawyer in not arguing fiercely in favour of the boy. He made them dig deep into the issue and not decide the fate of little kid based on superficial evidences. Just like the real world, the jury was also comprised of people of different mentalities and personalities. He knew the art of dealing with people of different personalities. He convinced the confused jurors by logical and reasonable counter arguments while convinced others by making them realise that their prejudices or personal animosities were obscuring the truth from them. To be able to do this amount of convincing one should know the facts, make some research and stand for what they believe in and this is exactly what the juror number eight had done. He had keenly followed the case, knew his facts, had done research on the kid, his background, he went so far as to break the law by buying a switch knife just to uphold the “Blackstone’s Principle”.

He couldn’t have turned around the jury all alone; there were some strong characters in the room that helped his case. Though all of the jury contributed to the course of the decision making in different magnitudes, there were few who were prominent in them. These strong characters according to me were the Juror number nine, the old experienced man, who had the wisdom to know the personality traits, he was the one who came up with the fact that the old man could be lying to seek attention because of his non eventful life. He also came up with the fact that woman in order to hide her age had not been wearing her eye glasses to the court room. He was also the first person to support juror number eight saying “It’s not easy to stand alone against the ridicule of others”. Only a strong experienced man can make such detailed observation and decision. Some of these jurors were supporting the juror number eight and some were opposing. The existence of jurors who were against his views made his argument all the more convincing and glorious. Tao Te Ching, the classic Chinese text when explaining about the symbol of duality Yin Yang says “We can only know beauty because there is ugliness, all can know Good as Good only because there is Evil”. So another strong character was juror number three, though his decision was because of his personal animosity against his son, he stood firm to his decision which made the rest of the jury to reason and come up with logical arguments to convince him. Though personally he might not be a strong individual but in the context of the argument he was a strong character which helped in arriving at a consensus. The last strong character according to me was juror number four, being a broker he was always good with his facts and numbers. He had backed his decision by a rationale, so even to convince him it needed a very strong and a convincing argument. These two jurors helped the rest of them in coming up with a sound argument.

This film is a treat to a management student. Some of the management lessons that I could learn are,

1.      Always back your argument with relevant research and data.

2.      Stand firm for what you believe in but be open to accept your faults if there are any.

3.      Don’t walk into a discussion with any prejudices or preconceived notions.

4.      Don’t let your personal experiences influence your judgement.

5.   The world is full of different personalities and you have to respect and understand the differences and uniqueness in them.

6.      “Walk alone if you want to go fast but if you want to go far go together”, it teaches the strength of a team.

7.      Don’t be afraid if you are alone in your cause as long as you are right, because sooner or later the world will realise the truth.

To conclude, the movie “12 Angry Men” is an absolute treat to a movie enthusiast and a gem to a person who is learning the ways of life.

Leader in you

When a honey bee returns to its hive after a long search for food, it performs a dance for other bees, the direction the bee is facing during the dance indicates the direction of the food source and the duration of the dance indicates the distance and quality of the nectar that it has just found. We all have our own imagination and ideas about a leader, whenever we have a task of writing or speaking about a leader, we head to Wikipedia in search of biodata of POPULAR leaders, in this quest we miss out on the opportunity to recognize so many other leaders, who though not popular as many of our stereotypical leaders, are carrying out their work, leading and empowering people in their own unique ways. We see such leaders everywhere and that is what I am going to discuss about today, “The Leader in You”.

In order to identify these leaders, firstly we have to know whom do we call a leader. Leadership has got nothing to do with one’s position in a company or profession they are in, it has got nothing to do with fancy titles or the place they are in. According to me a Leader is anyone who positively influences the lives of others and helps them to achieve a goal. Although this is a broad definition of a leader, a leader might in different situations exhibit different traits.

Not just humans almost all sentient beings exhibit some sort of leadership in their life. We are naturally born with some leadership qualities and some we emulate by observing others. Nature has so many examples of leaders, as quoted earlier a honey bee-scout acts as a leader to its swarm, sourcing the food for its team. We can probably call this leadership style as leading by doing. Likewise a pride of Lions are protected by the alpha male of the pride. We might call this style as leadership by dominance. In a herd of zebras we see them leaning on each other to rest, which can be compared to great leaders having strong support systems to de-stress in their life.

While we can always emulate and adapt a leadership style from other species, there are so many direct examples that we get to see in our everyday lives like our parents who selflessly dedicate their life for the family, teachers who responsibly guide their pupils, a stranger who stops his car in the middle of a busy traffic to help an old person to cross the road or a small kid who stops to share her lunch with the homeless kids. Let us see some examples of such everyday leaders.

Everyday Leaders

Anand Kumar is an Indian mathematician, who hails from an economically poor family in Patna, Bihar, India. Very early in his life he developed deep interest in Mathematics and did his undergraduate degree in Mathematics. Owing to his brilliance, he got admitted to Cambridge University for graduate studies, but due to his father’s untimely demise and his financial problems, he couldn’t pursue his further education. However his dream was just not to study mathematics but also help others learn this wonderful subject, thus he started a small institution, where he taught mathematics to students.

In early 2000, a poor student approached him seeking lessons to ace IIT-Joint Entrance Examination. IIT as an institution over past several years has produced some of the finest engineers and entrepreneurs and thus has one of the toughest entrance exams in India. Anand took this up as a challenge and started a programme called “Super 30”, where he selected 30 talented but economically poor students and trained them to crack the IIT-JEE. Since 2002 till 2013, out of the 330 students that he has trained, 281 students have been successful in getting an admission into these elite institutions. He aims to build an institution which can serve the underprivileged children to get basic education as well as guidance to do advance studies. Anand is an example of a visionary who not only does the job at hand today but also who looks at the bright tomorrows.

Narayanan Krishnan is an Indian chef who has left his job to do social service. He was an award winning chef at world famous Taj Hotels, Bangalore and had a bright future in his career as a chef at Taj Hotels. He comes from a place called Madurai in Southern India. In 2002, on one of his visits to his hometown he witnessed a saddening scene of an old man, out of hunger eating his own waste. Soon Narayanan went to a near-by hotel and fed the old man. Moved by this incident Narayanan quit his high paying job and started a trust called Akshaya in Madurai. With this trust he daily feeds about 425 homeless and mentally challenged people in Madurai. Not only does he feed them but also grooms them to provide them dignity in the society. Narayanan is an example of a leader who selflessly strives to make everyone around better.

Nearly 25% of the waste generated by the city of Bangalore, India is plastic waste, Ahmed Khan who owned a business of producing plastic bags came up with an idea to use the plastic wastes in a productive way. He found out that plastic along with bitumen can be used to make roads. Likewise Cassandra Lin, a fifteen year old girl co-founded a company called TGIF- Turn Grease Into Fuel, which collects used cooking oils from restaurants and houses and converts them into environmentally friendly bio-fuel, which in-turn is used to provide energy to the economically poor families. Thus both Cassandra and Ahmed have found a way to turn waste to wealth. They both have displayed the ability of a leader to think out of the box and find a way to solve a very pertinent problem. George Bernard Shaw once said “you see things and you say why? I dream things that never were and I say why not?” this quote exactly suits these dreamers who are building the world of tomorrow.

Lizzie Velasquez is a 25 year old young lady who has a rare condition which only two other people in the world are having, by virtue of which she cannot gain weight no matter how much ever she eats. She is blind in her right eye and has limited vision in the other eye, because of her appearance some bullies called her ugly but she took it on the chin. Excellent upbringing by her parents has made her a strong and independent person. She is using her very appearance, what others called weakness as her strength and is inspiring millions of people out there by propagating the message that external appearance doesn’t matter in the real world, it’s what within you that defines you.

There’s another little leader in Aisha Chaudhary, who is spreading the message that happiness is an attitude. Aisha suffers from a lung disease called Pulmonary Fibrosis; a disorder which doctors predicted would not let her survive past her first birthday. Today Aisha is 17, an ambitious and creative artist who is going around the world inspiring people by saying that no matter how hard the troubles that you are in there are only two ways to deal with it, either to get bogged down by it or to take in your stride and move on by choosing to be happy. How can we forget my own University's Professor Randy Pausch who spread the message of positivity and courage through his last lecture?

These people are example of leaders who show how to react to adversities and how to convert negatives into positives. Sports are a powerful medium which have maximum reach in this world and we have many examples of leaderships displayed on the pitch which have inspired millions of people across the globe. In a recently held football match between Dnipropetrovsk and Dynamo Kiev (Ukraine), Georgian midfielder Jaba Kankava possibly saved the life of the opposing team’s midfielder Oleh Husey. Husey was approaching the ball to head the ball towards the goal while the goalkeeper rushed to catch the ball in his hand, in the process the goalkeeper and the midfielder collided with each other and Husey collapsed to the ground immediately. Jaba Kankava who noticed that Husey was almost unconscious, rushed towards him and forcefully opened his mouth and made him gain his consciousness back. A leader should have common sense and a presence of mind and that is exactly what Jaba Kankava displayed on that day.

We have seen numerous examples of runners in a marathon or in a relay, picking their fallen competitor up and displaying sportsmanship of highest order. These simple instances inspire millions of kids who are watching sports.

Conclusion:

Any person who is carrying out his/her work sincerely and doing it with dedication will always inspire others with their commitment, sincerity, honesty and integrity. Whether it is the Southwest Air-hostess who gives out funny pre-flight instructions or a rickshaw driver who strives hard to make the journey of his passengers pleasurable by excellent services like Wifi and magazines, they all are leaders in their own right.

A simple youtube search for random goodness or everyday hero will result in thousands of videos which show that there are millions of leaders amongst us. Thus I would like to conclude by saying, look around or even look at a convex mirror, and you’ll find out that Real Leaders are closer than they appear.
